AIR, Web Leading to Resurgence in Desktop Apps?

"A rich application usually relies on an internet connection for updates, synchronization, and feedback based on user interaction, much like an NC did. However an AIR app succeeds in running on a desktop unconnected which is exactly where the NC failed. Rich desktop apps can continue to be “rich” even while unconnected, and unlike most tradional rich internet apps, desktop apps have greater access to the the richness already present in your fat-client (or PC)...I see a lot of parallels here in terms of how data ubiquity and convenience is driving us toward a convergence between the desktop and internet."

Niche and vertical ad networks are more plentiful than ever. Advertisers looking to reach any niche - Hispanics, affluent gay men in major cities, ecologically concerned women or even Ironman tri-athletes can now do so through targeted buys on specialized networks.

...Increasingly, information on the web is becoming more and more structured. This process is happening via several major movements:

* The rise of APIs
* The proliferation of vertical applications that run on top of existing data
* An increase in classic Semantic Technologies and Microformats

Is this Bubble 2.0 or is it for Real This Time?

In late September 2007, privately held online social network Facebook, with an expected $150 million in 2007 sales, sought new investment based on a stunning $10 billion-plus valuation. A few days later, a financial opinion Web site, 24/7 Wall St., speculated that TechCrunch, a blog that grosses about $200,000 a month, might fetch $100 million or more. Now there's talk that RockYou!, the second-largest maker of software "widgets" that add features to social networks such as Facebook, might seek up to $500 million to sell out...

Top Online Tools & Apps for Journalists, Media Guys

Top tools and applications online journalists use to get the job done

Which software apps do online journalists use on the job?

There are a number of standards, including Microsoft office and Adobe creative products, but there’s a lot more applications out there that online journalists and producers are using during their daily tasks. Here’s a list of the applications mentioned @ this post

Google Music & Radio - Can Google Change the Media World?

Lloyd H. Cargo, in this post @ Michigan Daily, muses about what Google could do that could change the world of music, radio and media...

Googlediscjockey - Users could DJ live or they could program a set list and then go out and listen to the stream on their Google phones.

Googlecritic - Googlecritic could be an outlet along the lines of Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes, but with the flexibility of Wikipedia and the database of All Music Guide, where everyone can be a critic...

Googlecharts - Google has the power to track more than just Nielson SoundScan sales and iTunes downloads - it can more accurately gauge overall downloads, blog mentions, radio spins and physical sales....

Googlemusicblog - Googlemusicblog could be a one-stop site for the best in commentary and content. It could even be customized to the individual reader...

Social Network only for College Students - Qlique

Qlique is a web-based program that allows its users to network through chat rooms, comment boards, live interactions, quizzes, interactive games and more. While Myspace is open to just about everyone and Facebook is open to students in a very wide age-range, Qlique restricts its community to only college students.

This part interested me a bit:"Once the program is available, the users get a home screen all to themselves. The screen includes a wide list of "widgets," little icons that will open up the "LANscape" (a visual display of color-coded dots that symbolize other users in one's network), the local chat, music and even a vintage TV icon to visually interact with people in one's personal LANscape...the personal account homepage not only includes notifications but also opportunities to enter communal games and join in on the "Opinionator," a box of streaming questions meant to shake the opinions out of people and possibly strike up controversy.."

MeVu - A Page for all your Web Pages

MeVu A Page for all your Web Pages

With so many places people live on the net these days – social networks, blogs, bookmarking sites, photo sites, forums, their own sites – just how and where do they tell all their friends in all their communities, where else to find them? MeVu can help here by poviding you with a facility where you can create a page to provide infomation about all your pages.

Here is the blurb from MeVu which explains it in detail:

"
YouTube has a placeholder for just one "my website;" just which of their many pages does one input? Many sites do the same. And if they have room for all the dozens of sites to which a person can belong, do they really want to keep all these pages updated with all their other page links? Of course not.

But there is a way to handle this proliferation of web presences for social surfers. They can get a free page on the new MeVu website. No, it's not yet another social networking site, but a "helper" for those who have a social life on the internet. Each MeVu user creates a custom page (with a friendly URL like mevu.com/john) that will contain links to all the pages where they can be found on the web. They can name and describe the links, order them in any way they wish, into categories they create. Then, this simple MeVu address can be used as the single point of first contact, placing it in the ubiquitous "your website" fields, or anywhere else on their own pages they wish. They can choose a simple text link or one of several attractive MeVu graphic buttons. Now, when a MeVu user joins a new community or sets up some other type of site or page, they simply make one change to their MeVu profile instead of changing all the references to their pages on all their sites. Isn't that more simple?

Mevu is completely free and is designed to be easy to use and quick to set up. In addition, to the links in the custom categories, the user can optionally add contact information and a photo.

People are everywhere on the net, but now they can list and categorize all their pages, profiles and sites on one attractive and friendly page, as one point of contact, from which all their friends can find all their web presences.

With its deep pockets, Microsoft could buy the search engine leaders in such vertical markets as job openings, comparison shopping, classified advertising, travel information and more...."

Wisdom of Crowds - Business Using Web to Solve Difficult Problems

Read this snippet at a post @ Times Online, UK

"In March 2000 the struggling Canadian goldmining venture published geological information of its landholdings online and offered a share of a $575,000 prize fund to anyone who could use this to pinpoint gold. Within weeks hundreds of people, from retired scientists to students, had submitted well-reasoned entries. A remarkable 80 per cent of the 110 new sites identified produced bullion and the company’s value rocketed from $100 million to $9 billion.

Today an increasing number of corporations are putting their problems online...At InnoCentive.com, for example, giants of industry, including Procter & Gamble, post dozens of challenges every month."

Soulja Boy - A Genius Viral Marketer?

Soulja Boy - A Genius Viral Marketer?

Reading an interview with Soulja Boy, I came across interesting bit of info on how he made it tops...I'm quoting the relevant portion of the interview:

"...I took whatever the number one song out was—if it was 50 Cent’s “In Da Club”—I’d record “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” and put the song up and rename it 50 Cent “In Da Club” and send it out. So everybody was downloading, like millions of people all over the world, but when they got it, it was me that came on —“Yuuaah!” Everybody who was downloading the song was trying to find out who I was. So they was hittin’ the MySpace page and searching Google and Yahoo and all that. It got up to 10 million before they noticed who I was and then I got my deal with Collipark, who had seen the page and hit me up. That’s how that all took place."

So, so read that. Very smart...by renaming his record as the top-rated record at that time, he essentially hitched his wagon to stars and got enough people to know about him at no cost...wouldn't you call that super-smart marketing?

NoseRub - Open Source Protocol for Decentralized Social Network

If the title sounds geeky, perhaps their own introduction will help?

"
Social networks are great: you can stay in touch with friends all across the world and find new ones based on your interests. But often, social networks serve a single purpose or interest. For instance photos, videos or classmates from school and university.

This is not a problem by itself, but when you want to keep track of all your contacts in all this social networks, this is a lot of work for you to update your contacts list in all the social networks you are in. And you also might need to get a member of a social network, although you're not interesed in the subject, but only want to track your friends activities.

NoseRub only defines the social network and some basic content types like media, links, micropublishing and text. You can now add all your contacts to a NoseRub network and aggregate several social networks into just one.

And you always have full control of your data, as you can install NoseRub on your own server and have it connect to other servers out there."

Pattern Proximity & Proximic - The Next AdSense?

German Startup Takes on Google's AdSense

A new German startup, Munich, Germany-based Proximic hopes to do away with text ads, at least the way AdSense has been doing it so long...The startup has a new form of search technology it calls “pattern proximity”.

Proximic’s matching technology is different from others - instead of matching an ad based on a particular keyword, Proximic’s algorithm processes the characters on the page, parsing out unrelated content on the page, to provide the best match. This on-the-fly processing is independent of the language on the page, allowing Proximic to match nonstandard language, and this also allows Proximic to store much less data about each web page

Best Travel Deals Online Don't End in Dot Com - Web Car, Travel Secrets...

"Some of the best travel deals on the Web these days don’t end in .com but can be found on a travel company’s foreign offshoot, which usually ends with the country’s domain name, like .fr (France), and .de (Germany). Though the travel companies don’t advertise it, they often charge different prices based on the country of origin.

The savings can be considerable. An Expedia.com search for a round-trip flight from Melbourne to Sydney in August yielded a $350 airfare on Qantas as the lowest available, including taxes and fees. The same flight was listed on Expedia’s Australian Web site, Expedia.com.au, for 224.34 Australian dollars, or about $187 at 1.20 Australian dollars to the U.S. dollar."
