WiTopia announced Wednesday a bonus for subscribers to its virtual private networking (VPN) service: a free account for use with iPhone (News - Alert) or other mobile devices.
The free account has broader application for mobile devices like iPhone because it relies on a built-in VPN client. That’s because it uses another VPN method called Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), which is supported natively on iPhone.

"A rich application usually relies on an internet connection for updates, synchronization, and feedback based on user interaction, much like an NC did. However an AIR app succeeds in running on a desktop unconnected which is exactly where the NC failed. Rich desktop apps can continue to be “rich” even while unconnected, and unlike most tradional rich internet apps, desktop apps have greater access to the the richness already present in your fat-client (or PC)...I see a lot of parallels here in terms of how data ubiquity and convenience is driving us toward a convergence between the desktop and internet."

Sellaband is an online company offering a new model for the free distribution of music. It provides a direct link between artists and their fans, but is very different to MySpace.
It connects 'believers' to their favourite, unsigned bands by allowing them to purchase shares in their promotion. Just days ago, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, was warning that social networking may be a fad. Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, is far less dismissive.
Mr. Schmidt told a group of reporters at the end of its two-day gathering of an eclectic mix of Google partners, competitors, social activists and politicians that social networks account for an “enormous proportion” of Internet usage, and added, “It is very real. It’s a very real phenomenon.”

A teenager was airlifted to hospital and his father had his nose broken when gatecrashers went on the rampage at a 16th birthday party after details were posted on YouTube, police and media reports said on Friday.
More than 100 uninvited teenagers descended on the family house, stole whisky and champagne, smashed windows and started fighting, according to reports.

Yelp, Zipcar and Topix have each debuted WHERE widgets and are all currently available to subscribers on the Sprint and Alltel networks.
Yelp, a leading local guide, is the website where locals read and write about their favorite neighborhood businesses. Now, through the Yelp widget on WHERE, users can quickly and easily find top rated local content.
Zipcar, the world’s largest and fastest growing car sharing service, has launched the Zipcar mobile locator, a robust GPS-based mobile application that allows members to view and reserve Zipcar's worldwide fleet of vehicles based on their current location.
Topix, a Top 20 news web site and the leading news community on the web, has also launched a WHERE widget. Topix mobile leverages WHERE’s location enabled technology to feed users news or classified ads based on their current location.

A new beta product called Fuser might save you some time and login hassles when you're reading your e-mail. If you've collected several email and social networking accounts over time, and it takes a little work to log into all of them and collect the mail, Fuser could be the solution for you
You log in to Fuser, create a username and password, and give your usernames and passwords for your Gmail, MySpace and Facebook accounts. Fuser accesses each service and collects all unread emails, and combined them all in a Flash-based inbox.

Social Network only for College Students - Qlique
Qlique is a web-based program that allows its users to network through chat rooms, comment boards, live interactions, quizzes, interactive games and more. While Myspace is open to just about everyone and Facebook is open to students in a very wide age-range, Qlique restricts its community to only college students.
This part interested me a bit:"Once the program is available, the users get a home screen all to themselves. The screen includes a wide list of "widgets," little icons that will open up the "LANscape" (a visual display of color-coded dots that symbolize other users in one's network), the local chat, music and even a vintage TV icon to visually interact with people in one's personal LANscape...the personal account homepage not only includes notifications but also opportunities to enter communal games and join in on the "Opinionator," a box of streaming questions meant to shake the opinions out of people and possibly strike up controversy.."

"...if Google is vulnerable it may be in those specialized areas where there isn't an established leader. Despite Microsoft's best efforts to compete in generic search, vertical search may prove more strategic...There are plenty of other niches for Microsoft to mine. Zopa.com puts internet users who have money to lend in touch with those who want to borrow. The idea is that by cutting out the middleman (a bank), lenders can earn returns that beat a traditional deposit account, while borrowers also benefit from preferential rates.
Zopa vets borrowers with credit and identity checks and reports bad debts of only 0.2 per cent. To spread risk, each lender’s deposit is split among a number of borrowers.

Reading an interview with Soulja Boy, I came across interesting bit of info on how he made it tops...I'm quoting the relevant portion of the interview:
"...I took whatever the number one song out was—if it was 50 Cent’s “In Da Club”—I’d record “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” and put the song up and rename it 50 Cent “In Da Club” and send it out. So everybody was downloading, like millions of people all over the world, but when they got it, it was me that came on —“Yuuaah!” Everybody who was downloading the song was trying to find out who I was. So they was hittin’ the MySpace page and searching Google and Yahoo and all that. It got up to 10 million before they noticed who I was and then I got my deal with Collipark, who had seen the page and hit me up. That’s how that all took place."
So, so read that. Very smart...by renaming his record as the top-rated record at that time, he essentially hitched his wagon to stars and got enough people to know about him at no cost...wouldn't you call that super-smart marketing?

Did you hear about the site with the most cumulative Diggs? Patrick Altoft over at BlogStorm did a Digg Saturation List this week. The idea was to see how often a site is mentioned on Digg. Patrick did a Google search focused within Digg itself for a variety of sites, then put them in order. YouTube topped the list, followed by Yahoo and Google.

Heidi Pollock of BluePulse (who appears to be a veteran in the mobile space) gave a speech at Future of Web Apps Conference recently, and her message was a scary one - lots of problems getting pages to render on what appears to be about 1300+ browser/handset mobile combinations means developing XHTML Mobile content is a tough job...

Jellyfish - CPA Model with Discounts, and Commissions Shared with Buyer
Jellyfish, recently acquired by Microsoft, wants to turn the cost-per-click advertising model on its head. Under Jellyfish’s cost-per-action model, advertisers pay only when web surfers buy.
The site lets online shops of such stores as Target and Home Depot specify a buyer discount, essentially letting merchants bid for consumers. Jellyfish then passes along at least half of its commission to the buyer.

A new German startup, Munich, Germany-based Proximic hopes to do away with text ads, at least the way AdSense has been doing it so long...The startup has a new form of search technology it calls “pattern proximity”.
Proximic’s matching technology is different from others - instead of matching an ad based on a particular keyword, Proximic’s algorithm processes the characters on the page, parsing out unrelated content on the page, to provide the best match. This on-the-fly processing is independent of the language on the page, allowing Proximic to match nonstandard language, and this also allows Proximic to store much less data about each web page

"Some of the best travel deals on the Web these days don’t end in .com but can be found on a travel company’s foreign offshoot, which usually ends with the country’s domain name, like .fr (France), and .de (Germany). Though the travel companies don’t advertise it, they often charge different prices based on the country of origin.
The savings can be considerable. An Expedia.com search for a round-trip flight from Melbourne to Sydney in August yielded a $350 airfare on Qantas as the lowest available, including taxes and fees. The same flight was listed on Expedia’s Australian Web site, Expedia.com.au, for 224.34 Australian dollars, or about $187 at 1.20 Australian dollars to the U.S. dollar."
