Forrester Research has done a usability comparison between RIA (Rich Internet Apps) and HTML apps, in a report entitled Smackdown: Rich Internet Applications Versus HTML. The result:

"We looked for examples of rich Internet and HTML applications in each of four categories and compared how well they supported relevant user goals. We found that, on average, RIAs outperform HTML interfaces; at the same time, RIA usability can fall prey to basic design mistakes."

With the advent of the browser, many developers gave up trying to design rich clients in favor of a more standard user interface that was familiar to end users and ultimately less processor intensive on the client and in terms of bandwidth across the network.

As we enter 2008, an interesting phenomenon is taking place, in large part due to the frustration with comparatively simple browser interfaces coupled with excessive amounts of client horsepower and plenty of bandwidth. People are discovering you can create rich Internet applications that are still relatively thin compared with the rich applications typically associated with the desktop.

Researchers at Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) want to push the mobile phone's applications farther. They have developed software that turns a phone into a thoughtful personal assistant, one that helps people find fun things to do. The software, called Magitti, uses a combination of cues--including the time of day, a person's location, her past behaviors, and even her text messages--to infer her interests. It then shows a helpful list of suggestions, including concerts, movies, bookstores, and restaurants.

Tim Berners-Lee has appealed to an audience of wireless service providers and application developers to keep the mobile internet as open as the wired web has become.

In a speech at the Mobile Internet World conference, Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium, urged mobile network operators and other vendors to adhere to future mobile web standards instead of taking proprietary approaches.
